The Ultimate Guide to Cleaning Paintbrushes! 🖌️
Here’s your reminder of how to clean paint brushes. These basic steps can be applied other stuff too, like palette knives/palette … just don’t ask me how to get paint out of your clothes!
1 WIPE OFF PAINT from your brush onto a dirty rag or paper towel. Whenever you wipe your brush use a pulling action so that you don’t push paint into the brush & ferrule (the metal part of the brush).
2 USE A SOLVENT to break down the paint. The solvent is water for acrylics or water soluble oils & typically mineral spirit or even an oil medium for oils. It’s best not to use veggie or non-drying oils as it could end up in your painting next time you paint. Wipe the brush on a cleanish rag until it runs clear.
3 WASH IN SOAP+WATER I use masters brush cleaning soap but you can use a mild dish soap or Murphys oil soap. It’s best to wear gloves. Wash the brushes in a separate dish which you wipe with a paper towel & throw that in the trash.
4 REPOINT & DRY the brush on a clean rag/paper towel & let it dry. If there’s a lot of water in the brush dry it hanging downwards so the water runs away from the ferrule.
🌎🌍🌏 Try to avoid washing harmful pigments or the microplastics from acrylics down the drain. Unfortunately you release microplastics into the environment from many things like washing clothes with synthetic fabrics, but if you want to reduce your impact as a painter the best thing to do is to is filter the solids out of your paint water & dispose of them in the solid waste/landfill which tend to have very little runoff into the water supply. One way to do this is to let paint water evaporate & then wipe out the solids but that takes a while so you can also buy kits online to process acrylic paint water like the ‘Crash Paint Solids’ acrylic paint water kit from Golden.
Xtra notes: if you don’t have time to clean oil paint brushes but them in a freezer or leave them submerged in very slow drying oil!

How do I prevent my paintings from cracking? Cracking is more problematic for oil paintings as acrylics are more flexible but acrylics can still crack if you’re not careful! 🪵 Proper Surface Preparation: Use a quality rigid canvas, wood or metal painting surface that won’t warp or expand due to environmental changes. Make sure it’s well prepared for painting using high-quality materials like ac...

Hi I’m Jaxon I’m a portrait artist working from the oregon coast and even though I don’t work in oil’s I love watching your videos.
I love this advise ! Thanks for the reminder. Can you later with oil paint or is it best to allprima , idk new to painting altogether
You can do both! If you’re layering with oil paint you want to make sure u add a little more oil medium into your mixes with each new layer so that the paint gets more flexible & you don’t get cracking in the future. But layering techniques like glazing are some of the most beautiful!
its is a good explained summary of good savings tips with good visuals to support it :-)

As far as second hand goes, I've only tried eBay auctions so far and the classifieds never had anything interesting nearby. Here in Germany where I live, I can often only buy Schmincke Norma second hand and even if they contain a little turpentine and are not as high quality as other artist grade oil paints, they also cost less than these and are fairly priced and therefore at least in my budget. For a few colors that I need in higher quality, an ok alternative plan. There are a few obscure oil paints that I found on the internet that are now being sold online. I could try these out if my paint supply runs out again, but I try to rely on reliable quality for the big part.
I also mostly use student grade, it's enough for me and for some colors I think even hobby or scholastic grade are enough, but if I use these up much sooner then I haven't really saved anything. I think it's more likely to switch to an intermediate level between artist and student grade, like Gamblin 1980, Van Gogh, Jackson's Artist, which is student grade in terms of marketing but is technically above most student grades in between. I think that oil paints that I like are easier to find than acrylic paints because they have a similar gloss and with acrylic paints I first had to find out which I like best when dried because they have everything from matt to high gloss and it doesn't say how on the pack these look after drying. Instead, I have to pay attention to whether they contain drying accelerators and this is always stated in the descriptions of the paints as to whether they are quick-drying and then I don't buy them because most drying accelerators cannot be mixed neatly into the paint, but only with a solvent this can be combined with the oil paint. I want to paint with as few solvents as possible.
I think buying second hand has advantages and disadvantages. Often you can't decide which colors you buy and the price is cheaper than if the colors had been on offer, but you pay about the same amount to get your preferred colors in a larger set, so you get a few more in return Tubes for this do not necessarily have the colors that you prefer in the set that they put together. In return you exchange more color and have the challenge of doing something with it. For me, phthalo blue is too intense and therefore difficult to handle, so I prefer ultramarine blue as my primary blue.
I absolutely do not. I clean my palette daily. I put out fresh paint daily, after 6 hours the paint quality is diminished
That’s not the case for me - the paint hasn’t started curing before I get back to it. Many artists oil painters do it this way, many don’t, just do what’s right for you. :)
Finally something useful that I've learned watching Baumgartner Restoration
Thanks a lot!! (θ‿θ)
No problem!
This is why I use acrylics
$10 for a jar is a bit overpriced however I don’t see any other small jar options.
I’ve seen a knockoff of the Silicoil jar at Micheal’s tho I don’t know how good it is. but there are other jars that are metal on Amazon that can be cheaper. You can also use a regular jar and stick something in the bottom like a pop can with holes in it or a sink drain.
@@dorisroseart yes, i found some silicone brush cleaning disks to use with a regular jar but I’m not sure Chelsea brush cleaner might melt the silicone? Have you tried them? Also I have one metal airtight medium size brush cleaner from Amazon, I spilled it over my desk and ground while trying to close it. Maybe I am clumsy but that one doesn’t work easy for me. On top of it Chelsea cleaner is expensive!! Maybe I should stick with my sticky water mixable oils😅
Thank goodness. I like watercolor. I have a bunch of paper. So I don't have to buy anything else to practice oils. 🙃 thank you for the tip
my oil paints were a bit stiff so i added a bit walnut oil in it and when i painted on canvas the oil leaked on the canvas from the paints . can somebody plz recommend what to do
I mix magenta and blue ( blue> magenta ) and add a very minute amount of chrome yellow so that it doesnt look purple . The color does look almost like black .
Thanks for sharing!! 🩷💙💛
Is it ok to use cremnitz white
Personally I don’t recommend you use it, or any other lead whites. My view is that it’s not worth the risk as even if you use all the safety precautions, accidents can still happen. It’s definitely a risk around pets or small kids & even in the future if the painting breaks down or anyone sands the painting (though this is not super likely) you could cause unintentional harm. I can’t really speak to the characteristics of the paint as I’ve never used it but I’ve always been happy using titanium whites. So it’s up to you, some artists still use it & it’s possible to have strict studio safety but I have never felt that the benefits outweigh the downsides.
@@dorisroseartquestion What about something like schmincke flake white hue
6 months?! But I want to be a famous painter now!!!😂❤

What brushes do you use in procreate?
I used a pencil brush (that I modified a bit) to sketch it in, but then did the rest of the painting using Salamanca.
Check out the video description for more info!!! ❤
What about if you are doing the commition as the artist
The things to think about from the artist side are really up to you & what you’re comfortable offering. As mainly a portrait artist I enjoy doing commissions but many artists prefer not to. I’d recommend if you do offer commissions to set up a page on your website explaining how your process works so that you can direct potential clients to find all the information there. Make sure once you’ve discussed the project you get them to sign a commission agreement which clarifies all the details & ask for at least 30% of the total cost as a down payment. You can look up standard agreements or check out other artists websites for ideas. :)

What varnish should I be looking for!
Hi I’m Danelle from Washington and I make pine needle baskets.
I would contest the fixed ratio part, many artists mix their own paints to their own preferences, it's more flexible than this video makes it appear.
I just put gesso on the back
So avoid tubes that say lightfastedness ?
What is the name of this brush? What if I paint normally and make a mess with it. Will It work?
I love this painting it's so amazing!!!!
❤️❤️
Oils don't "dry", they cure
thank you so much for this!!!!! very useful ^^
You're very welcome! 💕
We ought to look at it from the victim's perspective, being cruelty free ought to be the top priority, not an "added bonus". Like what if brushes were made from killing dogs and cats? The documentary Dominion is fantastic for showing the reality of animal products. No hate, only love for animals ❤
So grateful to find your channel with all the tips on making things archival and caring about all of the details like preventing paintings from getting dusty!

Ooohh i get it hahahah
I’m afraid we are erasing all traces of painting oil due to it being used just for silly colors and we are now using it to power mega zords
We are now erasing all traces of the art oil and are using it for new purposes

Okay. Those that use phones... 🌚
That’s why I said the ‘best camera you can get your hands on’ 😝 I borrow the camera in the video when I’m taking final pics of my art - it may be possible to rent one as well - but not everyone has access to a more fancy camera for sure. Phone cameras these days can be pretty good & all we can do is use the best tools available.
@@dorisroseart alright then, help us with the tools when using phone camera
Is it necessary to mix solvent in oil paint ? I am using oils for the 1st time any tips pls
No it’s not. In fact I don’t use solvent while I’m painting. I use it to clean my brushes at the end of the day before soap & water. Sometimes I will use solvent with my paint to create a thin wash in the first layer of the painting. Going solvent free means you’re not breathing in fumes as you paint but it does make it a little harder to clean brushes (you can use oil medium to thin the paint on the brush before soap & water). Just remember to be careful with oil soaked rags & make sure they always dry flat (not balled up) & put them in a metal cookie tin or fire safe container. Oily rags can be a fire hazard so even though they don’t have fumes like solvent they do come with risks.
Whenever i show stuff to mum, she squints and does all the "i dont have my glasses" stuff, so i have a suden urge to paint or draw this and show it to her and see what she does :D
🤣🤣 ironically my glasses broke while painting this series & I was like but I need my glasses so I can paint like I don’t have my glasses haha
I honestly had no idea it took so long for an oil painting to cure. Thats wild
Tell me most people who paint didn't went to art school without telling me 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Omg… I’m a digital artist and I just bought stuff because my sister in law is getting married and I decided to attempt an oil painting of her and her fiance as a gift. but um it’s in 10 days even if I start and finish in a day it wont dry :(
Oh dear! If you don’t paint too thickly & use linseed or alkyd oils it could ‘feel dry’ aka be unsmudgable before the event & you can gift the painting then let it fully cure before varnishing later. I’m sure they’ll appreciate such a thoughtful gift even if it’s not fully dry/cured in time for the wedding!
@@dorisroseart I really admire you more now because I tried to paint today, and honestly it's so much work! To set up all the necessary stuff in a working space, mixing and searching for colours, the smell of paint and turpentine, the cleaning everything after was such a hassle! And so much patience to wait for it to dry several times. Digital art is amazing honestly you have infinite canvas, colours, brushes, no cleaning or mess is involved, you can always take things back, play with proportions etc. For this i had to buy lots of stuff and the white paint I already used most of .. traditional art is seriously expensive and effort consuming I think I'll stick with my tablet :) I did a really bad job as well . I was expecting paint to be thicker for some reason or maybe I'm the problem, but it didn't hold like I wanted, I wanted to put layers on the base colours and I had to use a lot of white , like thin white lines that are very clear, for her dress details which were full of white flower and plant motives over light blue, didn't hold at all so I gave up on that. I'd done watercolour on thick paper before and was happy with those results. Oil definitely doesn't agree with me
H E L P PLEEZE: Do you have any portrait painting videos that are slowed down so I can study them easier? I'm a good graphite portrait artist but I want to do oils. I love your technique of almost finishing an area as you go. That's what I'm used to doing with my graphite. Plus I love your skin tones you paint, so I'd like to try them out first of all. Thanks for any help.
I make more short than long video tutorials but I usually put all the information & more in the video descriptions. :)
@@dorisroseart Thanks. I didn't think to look in the description. I will now. :)
nice! thank you, doris!
You’re welcome! 💕
Thank you so much for your videos, I fine them very helpful.
🤗🤗 I’m glad you find them useful!!
how have I never thought of changing the white balance????
Where can I find the smallest diamond shape knife 😐
Can you please tell me that can I mix acrylic paint with water as the base coat??or should I use turpentine or something else?
